The doctor international health and tropical medicine time for another leap ahead
Editorial
We published a perspective on the same topic in 2016, when the programme was still known as Medical Doctor in International Health (MD-IH). A decade later, the professional profile of the MD-GH remains just as relevant, equipping medical practitioners with the skills and knowledge needed to work in resource-limited settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as within the Dutch healthcare system. The curriculum continues to evolve, adapting to the needs of an increasingly globalised world, resource-constrained settings and specific communities in high-income countries (HICs).
Despite having been in operation for more than 12.5 years, however, the programme’s financial sustainability has never been fully secured. The recent changes to the funding arrangements for the third year of training once again highlight this longstanding vulnerability.
